Notiz AI detects missing and incorrect registrations
Zaans Medical Centre (ZMC) is using artificial intelligence to perform advanced audits focused on compliance and completeness. In collaboration with Performation (part of Enovation since February 2025), ZMC has implemented the Notiz AI module for this purpose. This tool significantly improves the accuracy and speed of data analysis.
Within ZMC, the Care Administration and Billing Department plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, timeliness and completeness of registrations and billing. Since 2016, Zaans Medical Centre has been using Notiz, the registration control tool that forms part of the digital auditing solution. Nevertheless, certain challenges remained – particularly around under-registration and the validation of remote consultations.
Charlotte Rijkelijkhuizen, senior DBC advisor at ZMC, recalls how the idea of using AI first came about: ‘During an inspiration day hosted by our insurer, Zilveren Kruis, Erasmus MC gave a presentation on the use of AI. That got us thinking: what can we do with this?’
A relatively small error in a sample often leads to a substantial financial correction.

‘Within Horizontal Monitoring, we noticed each year that remote consultations continued to be an issue’, adds her fellow advisor Thomas Overmars. ‘A relatively small error in a sample often leads to a substantial financial correction. We needed a solution that would allow us to improve this structurally. That led us to choose Notiz AI – a module that applies AI to the electronic patient record (EPR) to detect missing or incorrect registrations.’
Tailoring the model to the hospital

Implementing an innovation such as Notiz AI is no overnight task. According to Thomas, the biggest challenge turned out to be the IT infrastructure: ‘It took months before the servers were ready. We needed coordination between our ICT department, the external IT partner and the auditing team, and that took longer than expected.’
Training the AI model also required considerable time and effort. Charlotte stresses the importance of patience: ‘The model had to be tailored to the hospital. AI learns from the input you provide, so that means you really have to put effort into it. During its implementation phase, Thomas went through more than a thousand records to determine whether something had been correctly flagged or not.’
A more effective feedback loop
The key difference compared to Notiz Daily Auditing – a system that cross-checks data sets – is that Notiz AI analyses text in the electronic patient record (EPR) and links it to recorded procedures. ‘Previously, we had to take samples and check files manually’, says Thomas. ‘That’s impossible to do if you want to review every remote consultation in a hospital. Now, AI analyses the entire dataset and only flags the cases that really need our attention.’
‘This allows us to work much more efficiently’, adds Charlotte. ‘Instead of addressing an entire department about reporting errors, we can now provide targeted feedback to a specific doctor or support staff member.’ ‘We can now pinpoint much more precisely where improvements are needed’, Thomas continues. ‘This makes the feedback loop more effective and ensures that doctors feel less burdened by general correction requests.’
This module not only helps us reduce financial risks, but also contributes to more efficient and accurate registration.

Another major benefit is that the model supports more effective implementation of Horizontal Monitoring in Healthcare, in which hospitals and insurers collaborate to ensure the legitimacy of claims. ‘Our insurer was open to this innovation’, says Thomas. ‘Together we explored how we could analyse consultations efficiently and which risks could be accepted. As a result, the audits are now much more targeted.’
Notiz also offers financial advantages, as audits prevent unauthorised appointments or expired authorisations from leading to unpaid care. ‘This provides greater assurance in the claims process and prevents financial setbacks.’
Pioneering
Both Charlotte and Thomas speak very positively about the collaboration. ‘To me, the direct lines of communication and quick turnaround are real advantages’, says Thomas. ‘When we have questions, we get answers quickly, and any required adjustments are handled immediately.’ ‘It was pioneering work for everyone involved in the project, but in the end, we built something together that we can truly be proud of’, Charlotte adds.
Transforming healthcare registration intelligently with AI and RPA
Healthcare departments are facing the challenge of ensuring that administrative processes run as smoothly and accurately as possible. This is where the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) comes into play. Some of the benefits of AI and RPA are listed below:
Increased accuracy
Savings in terms of costs and staffing
Improved compliance
Effective implementation and support
‘As a relatively small hospital, we play a leading role in applying AI within healthcare administration’, adds Thomas. ‘We’re also noticing that other hospitals are curious about our approach and increasingly ask us to share our experiences. For us, that’s confirmation that we’re on the right track.’
Take time to implement Notiz-AI
For other hospitals looking to use AI, the DBC advisors at Zaans Medical Centre have a clear piece of advice to offer. ‘Take your time with the implementation – especially with the technical setup and training of the model’, says Charlotte. ‘And make sure you have strong content experts on board who can fine-tune the algorithm.’ Thomas nods. ‘AI isn’t a plug-and-play solution. You need to work with it, test it, refine it and have patience.’
‘AI in care administration is exciting, but above all, incredibly valuable’, concludes Charlotte. ‘This module not only helps us reduce financial risks, but also contributes to more efficient and accurate registration. Ultimately, that benefits healthcare overall.’

GGZ Oost-Brabant uses Auditing: standardisation and customisation in care registration
How do you balance customisation and user-friendliness for practitioners while also meeting increasingly strict accountability requirements under Horizontal Monitoring?
Dutch healthcare organisation GGZ Oost-Brabant found the answer through collaboration with Performation, which has been part of Enovation since February 2025.
Care administration addresses financial challenges
ZorgSaam Zeeuws-Vlaanderen uses the Notiz tool (part of Auditing) to improve healthcare registration at source and reduce financial risks caused by incorrect claims. Thanks to collaboration between clinics and healthcare administration, “first time right” registration is becoming increasingly common.
