How Patient Journey benefits patients and staff at the Vulpius Klinik in Bad Rappenau

In the southern German town of Bad Rappenau, we spoke with Dr Guido Mohr to learn more about how the Patient Journey app benefits patients and staff at the Vulpius Klinik.

Challenge

A few years ago, the Vulpius Klinik began looking for an interactive and innovative way to provide patients with information. The plan was to offer a solution that would stand out from typical leaflets and brochures, as the clinic wanted to involve patients more actively in their treatment by using interactive media and videos. For Dr Mohr and his team, the key priority was to simplify patient information.

‘When preparing for an orthopaedic procedure, patients are confronted with an overwhelming amount of information. Our main idea was to offer patients an appropriate medium that organises the flow of information and gives them access to comprehensive, clear and meaningful guidance.’

“Our main idea was to offer patients an appropriate medium that organises the flow of information and gives them access to comprehensive, clear and meaningful guidance.”

Solution

The Vulpius Klinik quickly concluded that a mobile application would be the ideal medium for communicating this information effectively, and worked with the Patient Journey app to bring the idea to life. After several test phases, the structure of the care pathway for both a total knee and total hip replacement procedure was successfully digitised within the app. Original photos and videos were added to make the experience more interactive for patients.

Dr Mohr was heavily involved in this development process and describes the app as follows: ‘The app begins with general information about the patient’s condition and the treatment options available.

In the second phase, the app provides specific guidance on how patients can best prepare for their treatment. This includes, among other things, informational videos about the procedure and the hospital. In the subsequent phases, patients receive information about their hospital stay, including everything they need to know about the anaesthesia and the upcoming surgery.

After the operation, exercises designed to strengthen the muscles and support recovery are explained in a series of videos. In addition to all treatment-related information, patients also receive reminders about their annual specialist follow-up. The app allows us to involve patients in their care pathway from start to finish, giving them a sense of ownership.’

Benefits

The team at the Vulpius Klinik has received very positive feedback about the app, and it has now become an integral part of the hospital’s Rapid Recovery programme. For Dr Mohr, the app represents an innovative step into the future of patient care.

‘Modern technological advances play an important role in healthcare, and the app has become a valuable tool in our portfolio. In the coming years, we will see even more technological innovations that make our work more efficient and safer. The app has helped us to strengthen the relationship between patient and clinician, which is the most important factor for a successful treatment outcome. Apps will continue to shape our lives in the future and will have an increasing impact on our medical work.’
