Overview and peace of mind for Bernhoven thanks to Viewer from Enovation

Bernhoven is a primary care hospital serving the Oss, Maashorst, Meierijstad region, with an outpatient clinic in Oss. The organisation’s guiding principle is that the patient is in control: healthcare professionals organise their work so that patients retain as much control as possible over their treatment.

Digital support plays an important role in this people-centred approach, including the safe and fast exchange of medical images. With the switch to Enovation’s XDS Viewer, Bernhoven has taken the next step towards faster and more accessible patient care.

The challenge with images

The volume of diagnostic data is increasing, as is the need to share it correctly. That is why Bernhoven looked for an XDS Viewer that fully meets the needs of healthcare professionals. ‘We conduct a lot of research,’ says Melissa van der Sande-Niemantsverdriet, MICT advisor at Bernhoven. ‘It is therefore essential that images are exchanged reliably and efficiently, without losing valuable time.’

Looking for simplicity and reliability

Sharing medical images previously involved a process with multiple manual steps. Exchanging diagnostic results always required contact between the administration of Bernhoven and that of another hospital. ‘To save time, we looked for a solution that would simplify the process without compromising safety,’ Melissa explains.

Since Bernhoven was already using Enovation’s XDS infrastructure, it made sense to also explore its Viewer as well. However, before switching to another viewer, the hospital faced a challenge: Bernhoven is in the middle of implementing a new electronic patient record system. ‘We had limited capacity to run a large project, so we looked for a partner who was flexible enough to adapt to our situation.’

Safe, available and user-friendly

The requested flexibility was available. After Bernhoven was given access to a demo environment, where functional administrators and administrative staff could explore the system freely, the decision was quickly made. ‘It was such a positive experience from the outset that we moved forward without any hesitation,’ says Melissa. ‘The XDS Viewer met all our requirements in terms of reliability, availability and ease of use. Medical images are shared completely securely, and the Viewer is available at all times, even during peak periods. Moreover, the interface is so intuitive that anyone can use it. After the initial introduction to the system, my colleagues said, “We don’t need any training.” Everyone understood it straight away, which was a real relief.’

From test to implementation in two months

The Viewer implementation was unusually fast. ‘We wanted to switch to the new Viewer straight away, so together with Enovation we followed a tailored approach,’ Melissa explains. ‘The focus was on ensuring the core functionality worked immediately, with extensions added later. Ultimately, the foundation was up and running and full tested within just two months. Enovation worked closely with us to determine what needed to go live straight away and what could wait. That flexibility proved crucial.’

Collaboration that provides peace of mind

‘What I particularly appreciate is that you receive a response to your questions within a day,’ Melissa continues. ‘That quick turnaround really contributed to the success. The explanations are always clear, and questions are answered promptly.’ Even when challenge arose, they were resolved quickly. Bernhoven wanted to be able to manage user accounts internally. ‘That is not yet possible, but Enovation immediately began exploring the options. That gives us confidence.’

Direct insight into all available research

The Viewer is now being used by the Radiology Department, which is responsible for implementing our radiological image exchange at Bernhoven. With the launch of HiX, specialists within the hospital can also access the Viewer to consult the images directly. According to Melissa, feedback has been unanimously positive. ‘We often hear that the interface is clear and that it is particularly helpful to be able to filter by the source hospital of the data and the document type (image and/or report). A recent addition also ensures that new radiological examination results are immediately visible in the Viewer, provided the patient has given consent. This means the receiving hospital can immediately access the required images.’

More time for patients

How does the new Viewer translate to Bernhoven’s patient-centred vision? ‘Ultimately, Enovation’s Viewer saves a great deal of time,’ Melissa explains. ‘Thanks to XDS technology, images can be retrieved more quickly and with greater precision. This means there is more time for the patient, and we can offer greater certainty that the images will be available on time when the patient arrives at our outpatient clinic. As a hospital, we naturally want to avoid a situation where a patient has to undergo a repeat scan that has already been done elsewhere. This reduces the burden on the patient and enables faster diagnosis and treatment.’
